Do something Green Today

This Holiday Season, supporting our local, sustainable small businesses is a great way to contribute to fighting climate change.

The environmental benefits of shopping locally are not only good efforts to reduce our environmental footprint; they also benefit the local economy in our communities. Shopping locally can help decrease emissions related to transporting goods, decrease packaging for long-distance trips, and keep money and jobs within the community.

Here are some sites where you can search for sustainable local businesses. Please consider supporting them.

During the holiday season, the amount of trash produced in the United States increases by an estimated 25%. There are simple things we can do to reduce this percentage.

Here is a list of 10 simple things we can do to have a greener holiday season:

  1. Give recycled and repurposed gifts.

  2. Make handcrafted DIY gifts.

  3. Give experiences.

  4. Use recycled paper for wrapping your gifts.

  5. Shop locally.

  6. Use plants for decor.

  7. Decrease Food-Related Waste.

  8. Avoid disposables in the kitchen.

  9. Donate to Environmental Causes.

Seattle is perfect for the outdoorsy type given its proximity to so many activities like hiking, fishing, skiing, climbing, cycling, etc. It also happens to be home to Recreation Equipment Inc., better known as “REI.” If you’re moving to Seattle and don’t currently own any GoreTex clothing, it might be a good idea to look into it.

• Take a hike! Washington State is home to 186 state parks and 3 national parks. The most impressive and well-known is Mount Rainier National Park which is just shy of 2 hours from Seattle by car. The North Cascades and Olympic National Parks are a bit over 2 hours from Seattle. The North Cascades National Park Complex features everything from a wet rain forest to the dry Ponderosa Pines, with 1,600 different species of plants in-between. The Olympic National Park stretches out over 70 miles of coastline that feature glacier-capped mountains and old-growth rainforests.
